Peter Pan, minus the pixie dust. First read in 2003. Very much a not-for-everyone book. Wasn't entirely sure I liked it the first time, and I'm still undecided.

The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis
by Barbara O'Connor
(2nd grade and up)
Date Read: Nov 18th

Made an exception to the Fall Re-read-a-thon for Barbara O'Connor's latest, and I'm not the least bit sorry. It's a small adventure all right, and I like that, because hasn't everybody who's ever been a kid gotten themselves engrossed in something small but out-of-the-ordinary that looms large on a summer day? For me, it was crayfish-hunting with my cousin - codename: Ratboy. We probably spent two days catching a whopping half dozen of those little buggers, yet the memory hangs on grand and vivid as though we'd been wading alongside Huck Finn on the Mississippi. That's what Popeye and Elvis is like.
