  1. BulletWhy so many scenes from 1/14 August 1917, you might ask?

Originally, the events of 1914-1916 were told by the grand duchesses as they sit up through the wee hours of August 1/14, waiting for the train that will take them into exile. I eventually conceded that keeping track of four voices AND a non-linear plotline with switching tenses was a lot to ask of my readers, so I scrapped the memory lane format and converted everything to a chronological present tense narrative. Most of these deleted scenes are the frames that introduced the girls’ reminiscences.
